Well really, it's because....

....I know it's all just a state of mind.

I was listening to a really great song today. In fact I'm listening to it again right now, and it's wonderful. The song is Misty Mountain Hop - Led Zeppelin in case you were wondering.

I suppose I could even fill you up.... with some conjecture on what the song is about... Like to hear it? Here it goes.... Some people say this song is about sitting in a park getting high and running into the cops. Well hell, check out these lyrics:

I didn't notice but it had got very dark and I was really
Really out of my mind.
Just then a policeman stepped up to me and asked us, said,
"Please, hey, would we care to all get in line,
Get in line."
Well, you know, they asked us to stay for tea and have some fun; Oh, oh,oh.
he said that his friends would all drop by, ooh.

Why don't you take a good look at yourself and describe what you see,
and baby, baby, baby, do you like it?
There you sit, sitting spare like a book on a shelf rustin',
ah, not trying to fight it.
You really don't care if they're comin'; oh, oh,
I know that it's all a state of mind.

So, I'm listening to this song, and things are slowly sinking in. Like the fact that all of life really is about your state of mind. Your position, your success, your perception, how you are perceived.... all of it.

It's all a state of miiiind... wooo hoooo... wooooooo hooooooo... wooo hoooo.... wooooooo hooooooo...

Oh I really don't know.... whoa... whoa... Oh I really don't knoooowwwww

Silly monkey given thumbs...

This is definitely one of the best songs by Tool that I have ever had the pleasure to hear and then read lyrics for. The song is called "Right in Two" and it's about the evolution of man, and how we tend to use all of our totally kick ass abilities (such as having an opposable thumb) in order to control and subdue each other, as opposed to everyone working together to get ahead collectively.
I think this song hits a few topics right on the nose, but the most prevalent theme throughout the song has to do with the fact that humans are often more worried about what their "equals" are doing, or how far ahead they are, than what they should be worrying about which is personal progress and self motivation.
Anyhow... I really shouldn't even be talking... here are the lyrics:

Right in Two - 10,000 Days - Tool:
Don't these talking monkeys know that
Eden has enough to go around?
Plenty in this holy garden, silly monkeys,
Where there's one you're bound to divide it.
Right in two.

Angels on the sideline,
Baffled and confused.
Father blessed them all with reason.
And this is what they choose.
And this is what they choose...

Monkey killing monkey killing monkey
Over pieces of the ground.
Silly monkeys give them thumbs,
They forge a blade,
And where there's one
they're bound to divide it,

Right in two.

Right in two.

Monkey killing monkey killing monkey.
Over pieces of the ground.
Silly monkeys give them thumbs.
They make a club.
And beat their brother, down.
How they survive so misguided is a mystery.

Repugnant is a creature who would squander
the ability to lift an eye to heaven,
conscious of his fleeting time here.

Cut it all right in two

Cut it all right in two

Cut it all right in two

Cut it all right in two

Fight over the clouds, over earth, over canyon
They fight for our love, for our blood, over heaven,
Fight over love, over sun,
over nothing, they fight till they die,
and for what? For their lives ending.

Angels on the sideline again.
Benched along with patience and reason.
Angels on the sideline again
Wondering when this tug of war will end.

Cut it all right in two

Cut it all right in two

Cut it all right in two

RIGHT IN TWO!

Right in two...

So, how do you like them apples?

Sunshine go away today, I don't feel much like dancing...

I came home today and turned on the television and on came a Jeep commercial. You may have seen it, it shows the jeep from a very early model through the current model, each scene shows a different jeep and has something different going on. One of the scenes is Elvis dancing, another is an army brigade sitting at roll call on a base.

Anyhow, there is part of a song playing in the background, but they chop it down to just about the first and last verse. On the commercial it goes like this:

Sunshine go away today
I don't feel much like dancing

Sunshine come on back another day
I promise you I'll be singing

Well for some reason it caught my ear, I think I just liked the singer's voice and the lyrics spoke to me a bit.

So I looked the whole thing up:

Artist: Jonathan Edwards
Song: Sunshine (Go Away Today)

Sunshine go away today
I don't feel much like dancing
Some man's gone, he's tried to run my life
Don't know what he's asking
He tells me I'd better get in line
Can't hear what he's saying
When I grow up I'm going to make it mine
But these aren't dues I been paying
(Chorus)
How much does it cost, I'll buy it
The time is all we've lost, I'll try it
But he can't even run his own life
I'll be damned if he'll run mine, Sunshine
Sunshine go away today
I don't feel much like dancing
Some man's gone he's tried to run my life
Don't know what he's asking
Working starts to make me wonder where
The fruits of what I do are going
He says in love and war all is fair
But he's got cards he ain't showing
(Chorus)
Sunshine come on back another day
I promise you I'll be singing
This old world, she's gonna turn around
Brand new bells'll be ringing
So I went in search of a sample to hear the whole song. First I went to the artist's website (linked above at the artist's name), but he had the live version up. Lame. I mean I guess it's good if you like live versions, with singers other than the artist trying not to butcher the shit out of the song.
So then I went to good ol' amazon. Low and behold the listening tools on amazon are the shit! You can follow the source link below and it will take you to the sample player for his first album. Track 7 is "Sunshine" and you get to listen to a whole 30 seconds of it... shitty I know.
Anyhow, for some reason after reading this song today I'm really loving life. Don't ask me to explain it, it's just what it is.
